It is widely acknowledged that Anne Cole a leading fashion designer based in California launched the first tankini in 1998. This step, while just as innovative as the bikini has not created the uproar that the bikini did. The bikini took the fashion industry by storm. Perhaps because the bikini was controversial or for some even shocking, while the tankini is less controversial. In any case, it is now widely acknowledged that this was the most important development in women's swimwear since the bikini. It is estimated that nearly one-third of women's swimwear sales are tankinis. But surprisingly many people are not aware of this practical garment. What is so different in this article of clothing? Like the bikini it is a two-piece. But unlike the bikini which has the goal to reveal a great deal of skin, tankinis are more about modesty. While many people associate the tankini with larger women this swimwear is purchased by women of all sizes because it has convenience never before possible.
What kind of convenience is possible? The tankini covers the body like one piece swim wear, however because it is a two-piece, it allows a woman to use the toilet without removing her swimsuit. The classical garment is made of a tank top and a bikini bottom, which is the reason for the unusual sounding name. However today many combinations of uppers and lowers are available. Women are combining bandeau, halters or strapless tops with shorts, thongs or skirts. The flexibility of being able to combine nearly any kind of top with nearly any kind of bottom enables women to dress for the sun during the day and then slip into a skirt and go to a party without changing her clothes. Another advantage is that the two pieces can be purchased separately. So, if a woman gets pregnant, gains weight or simply decides she wants to change her look, she can mix and match her old tankini with nearly an unlimited selection of other items to create an entirely new outfit.
